Fourah Bay College will receive $13 million  from the  OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) to enhance higher education in Sierra Leone.  In its 141st Session, OFID has approved $300 million in 22 loans and grants to boost socio-economic development in 23 partner countries. Seven African countries including Sierra Leone, received a third of the total funds.

This comes days after rumors that a possible hike in fees may spark tension between FBC administration and students. Educational standards and living conditions have deteriorated over the years with students complaining about issues ranging from transportation to dilapidated and overcrowded hostels. Earlier this year exams were postponed because the school ran out of paper.

FBC was founded by missionaries in 1827. It the oldest and first western-styled University in West Africa.

Brilliant news; education will empower the next generation of Sierra Leoneans! Is there any information on how the scholarships will be allocated? Corruption could make it nepotistic?
