Meet Sierra Leone’s Trailblazers

1. Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh – The Scholar-Statesman

Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh is recognized as a 2026 trailblazer for his results-driven leadership in transforming Sierra Leone’s developmental landscape. In 2025, he personally spearheaded the national response to the MPox outbreak and secured a landmark $480 million Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) compact to overhaul the nation’s energy infrastructure. This was followed by his chairing the inaugural MCA-Sierra Leone board meeting to oversee the implementation of these critical reforms.
Deeply committed to mobilizing global Sierra Leonean expertise, VP Jalloh held a high-level engagement with diaspora stakeholders in London in July 2025 to encourage investment in national priorities. He is set to further this agenda as the keynote speaker for the 2026 Sierra Leone Diaspora Investment Conference in London on June 19-20.
His current impact is the culmination of nearly twenty years in international governance and post-conflict reconstruction. A “top-notch specialist” on the Sahel, Dr. Jalloh served as a UN Advisor and West Africa Analyst for the International Crisis Group, where his expertise in state-building influenced policy at the highest levels.
With a PhD from the University of Bordeaux focused on the comparative analysis of state collapse and reconstruction, he has transitioned from studying the theory of statecraft to actively applying its principles as Vice President. By enforcing international best practices and building robust institutional frameworks, Dr. Jalloh continues to address the “state-in-construction” challenges he once researched.
2. Juma Bah – The Football Prodigy

Juma Bah is a 2026 trailblazer for his meteoric rise in world football. In January 2025, at just 19, he became one of the youngest Sierra Leoneans to sign for a club in Europe’s elite “Big Five” leagues, joining the reigning English champions, Manchester City.
This historic transfer followed a landmark debut in September 2024, when Bah—playing for Real Valladolid against Real Sociedad—became the first Sierra Leonean to ever feature in the Spanish top flight. At just 18, he was already rewriting the record books.
Born in Freetown in 2006, Bah’s journey began in a modest household where his parents ran a small bakery. Before his morning training sessions, a young Bah would rise at 4 a.m. to fetch firewood for the ovens, balancing his dedication to his family with his passion for street football. Those early mornings on the streets of the capital laid the foundation for his resilience and skill.
Currently honing his craft on loan at Ligue 1 side OGC Nice, the 20-year-old centre-back serves as a powerful reminder to young Sierra Leoneans to dream without limits.
His story is a testament to the fact that even the most humble beginnings can lead to extraordinary heights.
From a young boy helping in a family bakery to the pinnacle of European football, Bah has become the most valuable Sierra Leonean player abroad, with a market valuation of 10 million euros.
Juma Bah embodies the Sierra Leonean spirit of perseverance; he is truly our nation’s brightest footballing export.
3. Siana Bangura – Playwright, Filmmaker & Cultural Force

Siana Bangura is a multi-talented British-Sierra Leonean storyteller, Cambridge-educated poet, and social justice advocate. She is recognized as a 2026 trailblazer for her unparalleled success in elevating Sierra Leonean narratives within the British arts scene. In 2025, as co-founder and curator of the Sierra Leone Arts & Culture Festival (SLACfest), she transformed London’s Theatre Peckham into a vibrant hub of art, history, and heritage during the “Young, Gifted and Black” season.
Her 2024 play, Swim, Aunty, Swim!, achieved a historic double triumph, winning Best New Play at the UK Theatre Awards and Best Playwright at the Black British Theatre Awards. This landmark achievement successfully introduced Sierra Leonean storytelling to the UK’s most prestigious stages.
Beyond the stage, Bangura is an award-winning filmmaker whose poetic short film, The Waves, has garnered international acclaim across Chennai, New York, Los Angeles, and Cannes, further cementing her status as a global cultural force.
4. Oswald Abioseh Dundas – Inventor & Tech Pioneer

Oswald Abioseh Dundas is recognized as a 2026 trailblazer for his historic achievement as the first Sierra Leonean to reach the global finals of the Startup World Cup. His groundbreaking technology, which converts saltwater into electricity, offers a sustainable solution to Sierra Leone’s pressing energy needs.
Innovation runs in the family; his grandfather built the nation’s first eco-friendly charcoal stove in 1985. Oswald advanced this legacy by developing Water Light Technology. This invention propelled him to the Startup World Cup Grand Finale in San Francisco, where he represented West Africa after outperforming 30 other startups.
At 34, Dundas has already established himself as a versatile innovator, having also built Sierra Leone’s first robot. His presence on the global stage in San Francisco marks a significant milestone for the country’s burgeoning tech sector.
The inspiration for his energy solution was deeply personal. After his son fell ill during a power outage, Oswald committed himself to ensuring that no other parent in Sierra Leone would have to face the challenges of a lack of electricity during a medical emergency.
5. Sama Kai – Photographer & Visual Storyteller

London-based Sierra Leonean photographer Sama Kai is recognized as a 2026 trailblazer for his breakthroughs in documentary photography. 6. Aminata Dumbuya – Clean Tech Entrepreneur & CEO, Freetown Waste Transformers

Aminata Dumbuya is our 2026 trailblazer for securing a landmark five-year exclusive concession from the Freetown City Council in 2025. This achievement, which involves managing waste for over 15,000 registered customers, validates her pioneering vision that a Sierra Leonean woman could build a world-class waste management technology company from the ground up.
A clean tech pioneer and former energy access leader at Power for All and the African MiniGrid Developers Association, Dumbuya is transforming how Freetown manages its waste by turning urban trash into valuable resources.
Since repatriating to Sierra Leone in 2004, she has been committed to rebuilding the nation’s infrastructure. Her company, Freetown Waste Transformers, converts organic waste into fertilizer and clean energy, effectively replacing traditional diesel generators with sustainable green technology.
With Freetown generating an estimated 550,000 tonnes of waste annually, Dumbuya’s mission is as practical as it is ambitious: to turn waste into treasure while making the capital clean again.
To scale this impact in a city of 1.4 million people, she led the development of DortiBox, a digital platform that automates waste collection. This innovation recently earned her prestigious recognition from the World Bank’s “Go Circular” initiative.
7. ApreeL – The Singer-Songwriter

ApreeL is recognized as a 2026 trailblazer for his standing as one of Sierra Leone’s most versatile and original artists. As a singer, songwriter, and producer, he crafts a culturally forward and contemporary sound that has garnered him international acclaim, including a featured spotlight in Rolling Stone Magazine.
Born Kabba Sesay in 1997, ApreeL is a fast-rising Afro-fusion star currently signed to Eminence Africa Entertainment.
Having launched his musical journey at just 18 while still in school, ApreeL masterfully blends his native Temne and Krio with a sophisticated fusion of traditional rhythms and modern Afro-beats.
With successful hits like “Control” and “Swity Miliki,” his upcoming EP—which we have had the exclusive privilege of hearing—promises to be a masterclass in production. Despite being a relatively new face in the industry, his melodic ear and vocal maturity are already well beyond his years.
8. Isata Dumbuya – Midwife, Head of Nursing and Midwifery at the Paul E. Farmer Maternal Centre of Excellence (MCOE) in Kono

Isata Dumbuya is our 2026 trailblazer for her courageous leadership and service. In February 2026, she received one of the highest individual honors when TIME Magazine named her a Woman of the Year. This prestigious recognition celebrates a decade of life-saving work in Kono as a dedicated midwife who came home when she was needed most.
Drawing on 25 years of experience with the National Health Service (NHS) in England, Dumbuya returned to her hometown of Kono in 2018—a homecoming that proved pivotal for the nation’s healthcare landscape. As Head of Nursing and Midwifery at the Paul E. Farmer Maternal Centre of Excellence (MCOE), she has been a cornerstone in realizing Sierra Leone’s first state-of-the-art maternity and neonatal facility.
Away from her designated role at Partners In Health, she has worked on several life-saving healthcare initiatives since she returned to Sierra Leone, establishing a clinical outreach team to provide reproductive health education and services across all 14 chiefdoms in Kono District.
9. Amadu Lamrana Bah – Journalist & Co-Founder of Truth Media

Amadu Lamrana Bah is our 2026 trailblazer for his courageous decision to leave the stability of an established media empire to launch his own independent platform. In 2025, he built Truth Media from the ground up, quickly proving that ethical journalism is a viable business model in Sierra Leone.
His signature morning show, ‘Truth Morning Devotion’, attracts tens of thousands of daily viewers, demonstrating the immense public appetite for independence and integrity.
Starting his career as a sports and local news reporter, Bah has earned an impeccable reputation for unbiased reporting and a steadfast commitment to government accountability. He is widely recognized by his popular catchphrase, “Na di tru dae las.”
With nearly two decades of experience, Bah previously served for six years as the Director of News and Current Affairs at Africa Young Voices (AYV) Media Empire. During his tenure, he became a household name as a co-presenter of hit TV shows ‘Wake up Salone’ and ‘Hot Seat’.
A former President of the Sierra Leone Reporters Union, he has received numerous national accolades, including the SLAJ 2023 “Journalist of the Year” and the 2019 AWOL Male Personality of the Year.
Beyond the newsroom, Bah is a vocal advocate for social change, leading high-profile media campaigns against the Kush drug epidemic and corruption. His boldness in questioning public servants has earned him widespread respect across the nation.
10. Fatima Sesay – Serial Entrepreneur (Founder of Unimax and Golden Rooster)

Fatima Sesay is our 2026 trailblazer for expanding into the food industry with the launch of Golden Rooster while simultaneously running Sierra Leone’s largest locally-owned logistics company, Unimax.
In a sector dominated by men and foreign companies, she has held her ground for over a decade and kept growing.

She holds a Master’s Degree in Development Management from the Institute of Public Administration and Management (IPAM), University of Sierra Leone.
Sesay’s company, Unimax, provides a range of services, including local door-to-door delivery (packages, letters, boxes), shipping, forwarding, haulage, and cross-country logistics to neighbouring countries like Liberia and Guinea.
According to a 2024 report by the Sierra Leone Economic Diversification Project, Unimax has “over 100,000 deliveries completed for various businesses,” employing over 50 Sierra Leoneans, since it started operations in Freetown, where it is headquartered.
In 2026, Sesay further diversified her portfolio by launching “Golden Rooster,” a fast-food restaurant in Goderich, Freetown, that specializes in fried chicken.
11. Maria Bradford – Award-Winning Chef & Founder, Shwen Shwen Restaurant

Maria Bradford is our 2026 trailblazer for achieving the near-impossible in British dining: earning a Michelin Bib Gourmand and being named Michelin Opening of the Year 2026 within Shwen Shwen’s very first year of operation, while also taking Best New Chef at the Condé Nast Traveller UK’s Top New Restaurant Awards.
Originally from Freetown, Sierra Leone, she transitioned from a career in finance/accountancy to the culinary world, founding her restaurant business in Freetown in 2017 before relocating to England. When she opened Shwen Shwen, a high-end Sierra Leonean and Afro restaurant in Sevenoaks, Kent, United Kingdom, in 2025, her signature Sierra Leonean dishes quickly put the nation’s cuisine firmly on the global fine dining map.
The name “Shwen Shwen” is derived from the Krio word for “fancy,” a label Bradford reclaimed to highlight the refinement and complexity of West African cuisine. This mission is furthered by her debut cookbook, Sweet Salone, the first major English-language book dedicated to Sierra Leonean cuisine published internationally, serving as both a recipe guide and a cultural history.
12. Dr Austin Demby – Sierra Leone’s Healthcare Transformation Architect

Dr Austin Demby is our 2026 trailblazer for presiding over one of the most dramatic health turnarounds on the African continent. As Minister of Health, he achieved a 76% reduction in maternal mortality announced in September 2025—one of the fastest declines globally—while bringing the country’s Mpox outbreak from over 5,200 cases down to single digits by late 2025. This decisive leadership is the culmination of a career dedicated to tackling the world’s most complex health crises.
Before his ministerial appointment, Dr Demby spent decades at the forefront of global health security. He began his career in 1980 as a research scientist with the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), later serving as CDC country director in Sierra Leone, where he conducted vital research on Lassa fever and other viral haemorrhagic fevers.
He was a founding member of the CDC’s Global AIDS Program and, in 2014–2015, was the first US Government official to conduct a rapid technical assessment of the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, sounding the alarm to the global community.
Demby deployed to Sierra Leone five times during the Ebola crisis.
As Minister of Health, Dr Demby has overseen the electrification of over 380 health facilities with 24-hour renewable energy, the recruitment of more than 8,000 health professionals, and the transition of 10,000 community volunteers onto a formal payroll.
Since he became the Minister of Health, Sierra Leone’s vaccination coverage has remained above 95% for five consecutive years.
In October 2025, he represented Sierra Leone alongside the President of the World Bank and the Director-General of the WHO at the Annual Meetings Health Works Leaders Coalition Roundtable in Washington.
13. Ing. Tunde Cole – The Industry Titan

Ing. Tunde Cole is our 2026 trailblazer for his historic leadership as Chairman of Sierra Rutile, the world’s largest natural rutile producer. At a pivotal moment in the company’s history, Cole oversaw its transition from Australian to Sierra Leonean ownership. This shift was monumental: for the first time in over 50 years, Sierra Leoneans own and govern the entity supplying approximately 20% of the world’s natural rutile. Appointed on September 20, 2024, Cole represents Leonoil Company Limited, the Sierra Leonean firm that acquired a controlling interest.
In his first full year as Chairman, Cole acted decisively. In February 2026, during the Investing in African Mining Indaba in Cape Town, Sierra Rutile signed a landmark $40 million syndicated financing agreement with Ecobank. This funding secures the Sembehun Expansion Project, which involves relocating a state-of-the-art mineral sands processing plant from Kenya to Sierra Leone. Highlighting the project’s strategic value, Cole described the Sembehun deposit as one of the world’s largest natural rutile reserves—a move welcomed by the Ministry of Mines as a powerful signal of investor confidence in the nation’s mining sector.
14. Tommy Garnett – Environmental Guardian

Tommy Garnett is our 2026 trailblazer for securing UNESCO World Heritage status for Tiwai Island in July 2025. This historic achievement—the first of its kind for a Sierra Leonean conservationist—is the crowning jewel of a career spanning over three decades dedicated to protecting the nation’s natural inheritance.
As the Executive Director of the Environmental Foundation for Africa (EFA), Garnett has tirelessly advocated for West Africa’s ecosystems. His most defining work centers on the Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary, a biodiversity hotspot on the Moa River that is home to 11 primate species, including the rare pygmy hippopotamus, and over 135 species of birds.
Throughout the challenges of civil war and periods of shifting political landscapes, Garnett never wavered in his mission. His persistence has finally placed Sierra Leone on the global ecological map, ensuring that one of the world’s most irreplaceable ecosystems receives the international recognition and protection it deserves.
