Last Saturday was a big party night in Freetown, as over six thousand fans watched Drizilik and the Albert Academy Band perform a live brass set including hits from the kriofusion musician’s Shukubly and Ashobi albums.

Drizilik Sells Out Freetown’s Park: Historic Performance with 15-Piece Brass Band

Thousands flocked to Freetown Amusement Park in Sierra Leone’s capital last Saturday to witness Drizilik live in concert. The show was a sold-out success, leaving hundreds of late-arriving fans eager to enter but unable to do so. The atmosphere was electric as the Kriofusion rapper and singer emerged on stage, clad in his alma mater’s red and white marching band uniform, accompanied by a remarkable 15-piece brass band from Albert Academy.

While most Sierra Leonean musicians typically perform with a DJ and music playback, Drizilik’s 15-piece brass ensemble was truly extraordinary. Brass bands are synonymous with Freetown’s historic missionary and colonial secondary schools. The oldest, at the Grammar School, was founded in 1882 by Rev. Obadiah Moore, while the more recent Albert Academy brass band that performed with Drizilik was established in 1965 by American Peace Corps volunteer Mike Sherrin.

School bands typically play on the streets of Freetown during parades, funerals, and anniversaries, rather than at concerts. This makes their performance with Drizilik historic. By infusing the old with the new, the combination of Kriofusion hip-hop and afrobeats with a vibrant brass element was truly innovative.

The concert also featured energetic performances from guest artists Jelly Bee, Kracktwist, Dacintra, Incredible JJ, and many others.

Drizilik Takes Sierra Leonean Music Beyond Borders in 2024

The success of the show at Freetown Amusement Park (formerly Victoria Park) comes as no surprise, considering 2024 has been a remarkable year for Drizilik. He kicked off the year with an exhilarating performance at Triple Fest in January. By April, he was in Nigeria working on new music and making a guest appearance in a film produced by Idris Elba and Mo Abudu’s Ebony Life TV.

In June, he released “Send Money,” his most successful single to date, receiving widespread acclaim. Later that month, he returned to Los Angeles for the BET Awards 2024 and followed that with a thrilling performance at the iconic Howard Theatre in Washington, D.C.

Returning briefly to Sierra Leone, he collaborated with Da Cintra and released the chart-topping “Back at Me,” while announcing a headline concert at London’s Clapham Grand. Drizilik also celebrated his official induction into the Albert Academy Brass Band, participating in the school’s 120th Thanksgiving parade.

He then went back to the U.S. for a memorable performance in October at the Sierra Leone Diaspora Investment Conference in Maryland. A month later, he returned to London for an exhilarating show at Clapham, featuring special guests Idris Elba, Not3s, and some of the finest musicians of his generation.

Drizilik loves to perform and has fully embraced life on the road, traveling from state to state as a cultural ambassador, sharing the best of Sierra Leone’s music both at home and abroad.

Drizilik and Special Guests: An Unforgettable Night for Sierra Leonean Music

What a night to remember! The crowd at “Drizilik and Special Guests 3” was electric. From the moment he stepped on stage, fans sang along, danced, and cheered.

He opened the show with mellow fan favorites “Just In Case” and “Waste Time,” gradually building the energy with “Problem” and the smash hit “Exodus.”

Throughout his performance, Drizilik paused to express gratitude to his fans for their unwavering support. It was a joyous occasion, offering a much-needed break from the hustle and bustle of city life.

By the end of the night, the energy was palpable, and the crowd was caught in a pride-fueled frenzy. Drizilik, the beloved talent from Wellington Street, delivered a thrilling performance that solidified his status as Freetown’s brightest music star.

As the most streamed Sierra Leonean artist with sold-out shows both at home and abroad, Drizilik’s place at the forefront of Sierra Leonean music is undeniable.

The glass house is solid and clear for all to see: Freetown’s son is here, no shadows, just bright lights.
