Kao Denero Talks Music and Impact On VOA Red Carpet Show With Jackson Mvunganyi
Days before the launch of his Heroes album concert at Sugar Land beach Kao Denero appeared on VOA Africa’s Red Carpet Show, in the US.
The Rapper discussed his Heroes album which honors African Pan-African figures. He advised young African talent to think beyond momentary fame and focus on impact. Kao is thinking beyond legacy.
Kao Denero Shift To Conscious Music
“Ten years ago, I was focused on making the next hit songs for clubs and radio. Now I want to create timeless music that will last for generations,” Denero explained.
Moreover, the wordsmiths said legends like Bob Marley and Tupac Shakur inspire him. Long after they died, their music lives on. Why? They made conscious music, they spoke about issues affecting society. Kao is sure to make an impact, appointed by President Bio, he’s the country’s first entertainment ambassador. Although some wonder if he can wear two hats. Kao has an answer for the skeptics.
“Working in the office, making policies and holding meetings does not change who I am as an artist. I’m still a fierce MC and one of the best on the continent,” he said.

“Music from the soul is timeless. It’s about having a good spirit and working hard,” said Kao.
“Don’t just create microwave music that’s here today and gone tomorrow. Don’t be a one hit wonder.”
The award-winning Sierra Leonean rapper also embraces Africa and pan-Africanism and wants others to do the same.
“There’s a gap between my generation a d today’s generation. My generation knew about our history and the importance of music that stands for something. Today’s generation is more focused on drama,” said Denero.
The rapper is optimistic that his album will bridge the gap between past and present, rekindling an interest in Africa’s legacy among the youth.
However, he aims to reignite a sense of Pan-African pride and consciousness among the youth through his Heroes album.
Kao Denero’s Heroes Album
The album introduces emerging talents like Keltony with captivating lyrics and melodies.
Additionally, newcomers from the new school scene, such as Mus B and Stex, impress on Kill and Chop Life.
Also, the compilation opens with Think about it, the rapper questions African borders and leaders’ colonial loyalties. He also questioned visa requirements for countries within Africa. Think about it sets the reflective tone for the album.
Heroes which sits at tract 13 in the playlist recognize African heroes like Steven Biko, Thomas Sankara, and Bob Marley. Similarly, track 15, Strasser, pays tribute to the former Sierra Leonean head of state.
Moreover, in Essence the rap star featured Nigerian rapper Mode 9, Denero showcases his lyrical skills against one of Africa’s best. Legendary Sierra Leonean R&B artist K-man also featured in Yo Yo Yo.
Finally, the famous Ne2w did magic on the upbeat track My Sound, a popular party anthem.
The album which was released on May 1st, 2024 is still making waves as one of the country’s most streamed rap albums. The 15 tracks compilation has now surpassed 1 million streams on audiomack.
Kao Denero’s discography includes 12 albums. His debut, Black Leo for Life in 2003 paved his way to the spotlight. His second audio collection, storied from Freetown, with the hit Emonah featuring Big Joe, brought him to fame.
Again, his third studio compilation, King of Africa in 2005 earned him the title King of Freetown. However, the Heroes with its massive streams in Sierra Leone and beyond already sealed the crown on his head.
