This is the 10th year that Sugar Craft Designs has been in business baking Sierra Leone’s most delicious cakes. Proprietress Franklynette Johnson left London for Freetown back in 2005 with a vision to turn her passion into a business. Her story will be in next month’s edition of GoWoman Magazine.
Ten years ago, the standard was just colored balloons and a basic cake. Now, its popular themes like Spiderman, Ben 10 etc where the invitations, cake, plates, cutlery and bouncy castles all depict the theme of the party.
Wedding cakes have also evolved from a traditional all white, fruit cake to assorted tropical flavors for each tier, and the hobbies and interests of the bride/groom being incorporated in the design.
Sugar-craft has been setting trends, and other competitors have upped their game to meet customers’ more refined demands, but we are still in a class of our own when it comes to innovation and creativity in our cake flavors and designs. Over the years I have developed and perfected my own recipes by using naturally grown ingredients in Sierra Leone like the ‘spice surprise’ cake I created for the country’s Golden Jubilee which contained ginger, orange peel; the tamarind (tombi) buttercream, the pea-nana cake which is a delight to your tastebuds etc.
The Sugar-craft advantage also includes our excellent customer service wherein customers are given cake consultation appointments and have the opportunity to taste and select from our variety of mouth-watering flavors. We also have a space that has been beautifully decorated especially for brides who have an evening reception, but still want a photo of themselves cutting the cake in their wedding dress. It is really convenient for them to come to the shop with their entourage, and relax a bit as they receive refreshments of cake and drinks from our friendly and capable staff.
