On Thursday, March 14, 2024, in Freetown, Sierra Leone’s capital, 32 unidentified individuals, comprising 25 men and seven women who had all died after taking the drug known as Kush were buried according to a report by BBC Africa.
These individuals represent the latest casualties of this narcotic, a synthetic cannabinoid blended with other hazardous substances, which has gained popularity in the country.
Sinneh Kamara, the lead at Connaught Hospital Morgue, approximates that his team retrieves two to three bodies daily, yet due to the absence of identification, many remain unclaimed at the morgue. Kush addiction has taken hold, especially among young people facing dire circumstances.
In 2022, medical staff in Freetown revealed to the BBC’s Africa Eye program that 90 per cent of male admissions to the central psychiatric ward were linked to Kush use. Kamara emphasized the necessity for authorities to take stringent measures against Kush importers, yet law enforcement struggles to effectively combat the issue.
