The Sierra Leone Police has been ranked third for the highest bribery rate in Africa, according to the latest Afrobarometer report. Liberia and Nigeria lead the list, followed by Uganda in fourth place, and Congo-Brazzaville closing out the top five positions.
In a survey covering 39 African countries, nearly half, or 46 per cent, of citizens within these nations expressed that “most” or “all” police officials are corrupt. This marks the worst rating among the 11 public institutions and leaders included in the survey.
Of those who sought police assistance, 36 per cent reported having to pay a bribe to obtain the help they required. For those encountering the police in different situations, 37 per cent mentioned paying a bribe to avert issues, with percentages ranging from 1 per cent in Cabo Verde to 70 per cent in Liberia. Across the 39 surveyed countries, three out of every ten citizens (29 per cent) stated that their police force “often” or “always” engages in criminal activities, while 27 per cent mentioned they “sometimes” do.
The list also comprises Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Kenya, and Gabon, in that order, completing the lineup of the top 10 African countries with the highest levels of police corruption.
