Sierra Leone beats Egypt for a 1-1 draw
When we heard Sierra Leone National Football team Leone Stars were to meet African Cup of Nation Champions Egypt in the first round of Football Qualifiers we panicked and feared the worst. I thought the game was going ot be on DSTV but only Ajazeera Sport was showing the game and i didnt want to rough it at the local sports cinema so i stayed home. I was sitting in my room when a screaming, vuvuzela blowing, pot banging crowd ran into my compound. I ran to the living room “we don score? we don score?”…oh hell midfielder Mustapha ‘Hadji’ Bangura of Alpollon F.C. ( a graduate of Sierra Leone Grammar School) gave Leone Stars the lead and by scoring the opening goal in Cairo.
The noise died down and i was ecstatic and i went back into my room. Just a couple moments later, the excitement turned into murmurs as my cousins walked back into the compound grumbling. “What’s wrong?” Egypt had equalized. The game ended with a 1-1 tie but as far as I am concerned Leone Stars won that game. We played our hearts out and for holding out against the champions…Sierra Leone came out on top!!!!! FIFA ranks Egypt as 1 in Africa and Sierra Leone is ranks 36.
Mohamed Kallon didn’t even play at the match because of an injury.
I will be in at the Stadium live and direct when we whoop Egypt on the return leg. Look out for Sierra Leone…we shine when u least expect it.
