And the 2024 Prize Winners Are…

We are thrilled to announce the winners of the 2024 Vickie Remoe Prize for Journalism and New Media.  The Prize celebrates media excellence, originality, and creativity in print, photography, film, and content creation.

Below is a list of the 2024 Vickie Remoe Prize Winners:

Vickie Remoe Prize for News Writing

Winners: Ibrahim Mansaray & Ishmael Sallieu Koroma

Ibrahim is a passionate writer and an aspiring academic with four years experience working in classrooms and newsrooms. He won the prize for “Racing to class: FBC’s overcrowding problem” published on the 26th of February 2023 by Engage Salone. Ibrahim won Nle 10,000

Ishmael is an award – winning journalist based in Freetown. He has over 10 years experience writing for broadcast, print, and online media . Ishmael writes  on health, the environment, transitional justice issues, migration, and climate change stories for both local and international media . He won the prize for “High Kingdom: a 27-year-old’s battle with kush addiction” published on the 28th of May 2023 by Engage Salone. Ishmael won Nle 10,000

Vickie Remoe Prize for Photojournalism

Winner: James Tamba-Martha

James Tamba-Martha is a passionate photographer based in Freetown, Sierra Leone. His goal is to capture the beauty found in ordinary moments through his photography. He is a second year student studying Broadcasting and Journalism at the Limkokwing University of Creative Technology. James won Nle 15,000.

Vickie Remoe Prize for TV Broadcasters

Winners: Marian Amaria Bangura & Fatima Kamara

Marian is a journalist at the Africa Young Voices (AYV) Media Empire. She also writes for the Fourth Estate in Ghana. Marian is passionate about storytelling with a keen interest in investigative journalism, human rights, and accountability reporting. She holds a BA with honors in Mass Communications from Fourah Bay College. Marian won Nle 30,000. This is Marian’s second win for the Vickie Remoe Prize. Last year she won a VR prize for news writing.

Fatima is a broadcast journalist at the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC). She has worked in traditional media for four years, she holds a BA with honors in Mass Communications from Fourah Bay College. Fatima won Nle 30,000.

Vickie Remoe Prize for Content Creators

Winners: Doreen Deigh (On The Edge Podcast), Bernadette Kemokai (Bernini Travels) & Abu Bakarr Jalloh (The African Dream)

Doreen is the host of the ‘On The Edge Podcast’ and a multi-talented content creator, digital media and public relations and communications strategist, mindfulness facilitator, mental health and wellness advocate, and writer. She has a myriad of experience in crafting compelling written, visual, and audio-visual content tailored to the unique brand identities that she works with. Doreen won Nle 10,000.

Bernadette is the founder of ‘Bernini Travels’, she is an upcoming tourism professional, a children’s book author, an entrepreneur and faith-based. She loves to bring out the beauty in everything; writing a story, exploring limitless beautiful locations, people and culture or stringing up cycle accessories. Bernadette won Nle 10,000.

Abu Bakarr is the founder of ‘The African Dream’ a news and media platform, which he started with a Techno Spark 5 phone. His platform is dedicated to telling positive, inspiring, stories and stories of change-makers in Sierra Leone and across the continent. Since 2019, he has written and published over 500 quality articles on his platform and other platforms. His website boasts of over 500,000 readers across over 150+ countries in the world. He holds a BSc in Agricultural Economics from Njala University. Abu Bakarr won Nle 10,000.

About The Vickie Remoe Prize

The Vickie Remoe Prize highlights emerging journalists and new media content creators for excellence, originality, and creativity. The following awards will be made annually in Journalism and New Media. The four categories include news writing, photography, broadcasting (TV), and content creation. Last year the prize awarded the sum of Nle 200,000 to nine winners across four categories.
