In the lead-up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Leone Stars achieved an impressive 2-0 victory over Somalia in a friendly match hosted in Casablanca, Morocco. This victory stands as a significant milestone for the newly appointed coach, Amidu Karim, who secured his first win after two matches in charge.

The Leone Stars showcased a strong performance, and several standout moments defined this exciting encounter. Cheltenham defender Curtis Davies, 38, and HSV Hoek center defender Augustine Loof, 27, who joined the Sierra Leonean squad for the first time, made their debut and played the full contest. Their involvement in the squad adds depth and experience to the team, and their contributions were crucial to the victory.

The turning point of the match came in the 24th minute when Somalia’s goalkeeper, Bilaal Njie, brought down Denmark based striker, Mohamed Buya Turay in the box, leading to a penalty. Turay calmly converted the spot kick, securing his second Leone Star goal in Morocco.

Turay continued his stellar performance, completing a brace in the 58th minute with a goal from a through pass on the right wing. This win marked a fantastic return for Turay to the national team under the leadership of coach Karim, with three goals in just two games.

Sierra Leone’s number one goalkeeper, Mohamed N Kamara, demonstrated exceptional skills in a 2-0 victory against Somalia, making numerous crucial saves and securing a clean sheet. The Leone Stars’ victory marks their first win as they prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, facing Ethiopia and Egypt in November.
