Femi Claudius-Cole, leader and former presidential candidate of Sierra Leone’s Unity Political Party, passionately advocates for the protection of journalists’ constitutional freedom of speech in the country. Her plea follows the distressing arrest of Emmanuel Thorlli, esteemed Managing Editor of Nightwatch Newspaper, renowned for fearless journalism and holding the government accountable.

Thorlli’s ordeal commenced on February 23, 2024, with his detention at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Freetown, stemming from a contentious publication. This event has raised concerns about press freedom and the treatment of critical voices in Sierra Leone.

Claudius-Cole’s fervent appeal is directed at Chernor Bah, Sierra Leone’s Minister of Information and Civic Education. She underscores the urgency, highlighting that the minister’s involvement in addressing attacks on journalists abroad, like during the Israeli attacks on Gaza, should extend to local journalists.

“Your involvement in the conference on the issue of attacks on journalists in the Israeli attacks on Gaza would be so much more honourable & meaningful if attention and interventions can be given to journalists at home and to ensure our constitutional freedoms of speech are protected,” said Claudius-Cole.

In her impassioned plea, Claudius-Cole stresses the importance of safeguarding journalists’ constitutional rights to freedom of speech, crucial for upholding democracy and accountability. She urges the Minister to take decisive action to protect journalists like Thorlli from reprisal.

Thorlli’s arrest has sparked widespread condemnation locally and internationally as a severe infringement on press freedom in Sierra Leone. It prompts scrutiny of the government’s commitment to democratic principles and citizens’ rights.
