1996

Peter Anthony Morgan, the lead singer of Morgan Heritage, a Grammy Award-winning group has died on Sunday at age 46.

Confirming his demise, his family released a statement via the band’s social media channels, although no cause of death was disclosed. Morgan known as “Peetah,” was the son of renowned Jamaican reggae singer Denroy Morgan and his death signals a big blow to the reggae community.

He co-founded Morgan Heritage alongside seven siblings in 1994 and the band later became a quintet. Collaborating with esteemed producer Bobby Digital, the band crafted early albums like “Protect Us Jah” (1997) and “Don’t Haffi Dread” (1999), blending diverse influences with tight vocal harmonies.

A New York Times music critic lauded their reverence for 1970s reggae traditions, particularly their penchant for harmonic singing and meaningful lyrical content, ahead of a 1999 performance at New York City’s Irving Plaza.

But Morgan Heritage was more than a throwback to an older era of reggae. AllMusic.com described its sound as a blend of “elements of roots reggae, lovers rock, soul, R&B, calypso, gospel, dub, and on occasion, funk and dancehall.”
