Michaela DePrince: Taking Flight from Orphan to Star Ballerina

Michaela was born on January 6, 1995, in Sierra Leone, during the height of the civil war. She lost parents during the war. She was introduced to ballet when she was adopted by a loving American family. This pivotal moment in her life set her on a path that would lead to remarkable dance achievements in a genre known for its lack of diversity.

Her journey to stardom was beautifully captured in the film “Taking Flight,” which showcased her resilience and passion for dance. Michaela made history as the youngest principal dancer at the esteemed Dance Theatre of Harlem. She also performed with the Dutch National Ballet and most recently graced the stage with the Boston Ballet.

As someone who always dreamed of meeting her one day in Freetown, this news is particularly heart-wrenching. Michaela DePrince was not just a dancer; she was a symbol of hope for many, especially those who share her Sierra Leonean roots.

Rest in peace. You will forever be remembered–Young, Gifted, and Sierra Leonean. ️

Your story will continue to inspire countless girls and orphans around the world.
