BREAKING NEWS: Sierra Leone’s President Ernest Bai Koroma re-elected with 58% of votes
Sierra Leone’s National Electoral Commission has just announced that the President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma has been re-elected for a second term in office. Just under a week ago Sierra Leoneans went to the polls in a heavily contested race between the president and former junta leader Julius Maada Bio. The President wins with 1,314,881 or 58 percent of the total votes. The leading opposition party received just 837,517 votes polled representing 37 percent.
The Electoral Commission announced that there were no cases of over voting in the Eastern, Southern, or Northern regions while votes from five polling stations in the Western Region were annulled due to over voting.
Local and International Observers said the elections were largely free, fair, and well managed. President Koroma will be in office for another five years.
