UN pays reparations to victims 9yrs after war’s end
I heard on the radio that the UN Peace Building Fund had commenced the process of paying reparations to amputees, victims of rape and other war wounded 9 yrs after the signing of the Lome Peace accord. This was one of the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the predecessor of the UN Special Court. While the total paid out so far is est. at $384000 each individual victim only gets about $207 (le. 900,000). I am not exactly sure how the UN or NACSA calculated the amount per person but surely they must realize that this is merely a symbolic gesture of reparation. We are glad to see this happen and we recognize that no amount of money could ever compensate for the loss of an individuals limbs, or the treachery of rape .
May Allah help all of Sierra Leone’s physical and psychological war victims find peace.
