Where does a Sierra Leonean woman go if she’s suffering from postpartum depression? Who does she call if she has anxiety attacks? The answer is––most do not know, and they don’t know because there is nowhere to go.
This year’s International Women’s Day theme is “Invest in women: Accelerate progress,” but how can Sierra Leone’s women move forward with trauma, depression, and anxiety? There are just five psychiatrists for the nation’s eight million citizens, and they’re all in the nation’s capital, Freetown.
If we truly believe that empowered women contribute to thriving communities and nations, our leaders must prioritize women’s mental health. On this Women’s Day, the Nyali Foundation calls for increased support for mental health services for women in Sierra Leone. Our country urgently needs more trained psychiatrists, a decentralized mental health network across government hospitals nationwide, and trained community mental health workers. Additionally, we must work towards destigmatizing seeking mental health support through social marketing campaigns.
“We must break the silence surrounding mental health and create safe spaces for healing. Sierra Leonean women deserve access to clinics and centers staffed with trained professionals who can provide the necessary support,” said Ms. Mahawa Nyandebo, the founder of Nyali Foundation.
“No Sierra Leonean woman should suffer trauma or depression in silence.”
Nyali Foundation, originally established as a charity and community-based organization in 2015, shifted its focus to women’s mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, they organized group therapy sessions for women aged 18-70, centered around “Breaking the Cycle,” in collaboration with Plan International.
In the following year, the Nyali Foundation recognized the impact of social determinants on mental health, particularly among the youth in Freetown, leading them to launch an anti-drug campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse. The increasing use of drugs serves as a warning sign of the pressing need for mental health support services.
Moving forward to 2024, the Nyali Foundation remains committed to partnering with local leaders to establish a comprehensive mental health center dedicated to women’s wellness. This center will provide free psychosocial support and inclusive welfare benefits, aiming to achieve optimal mental well-being in alignment with WHO guidelines and the UN Sustainable Development Goal 3.
