Leone Stars Suffer Another Defeat in the Hands of Equatorial Guinea.

Sierra Leone’s hopes of returning to the Africa Cup of Nations have suffered another setback after the Leone Stars lost 1-0 to Equatorial Guinea in their second Group E qualifier in Yaoundé, Cameroon.

The defeat means Sierra Leone have now lost their opening two matches in the race for the 2027 AFCON tournament, leaving them at the bottom of Group E without a single point.

For new head coach Didier Gomes Da Rosa, the result adds pressure to a campaign that has started in difficult fashion.

Another Defeat After Zimbabwe’s Collapse

Only four days earlier, the Leone Stars had suffered one of the most painful defeats of their campaign when Zimbabwe came from two goals down to beat them 3-2.

Sierra Leone appeared to have the match under control after Alie Conteh opened the scoring in the seventh minute before Sallieu Tarawallie doubled the lead in the 27th minute.

The Leone Stars went into half-time leading 2-0.

But what followed after the break changed the entire game.

Marshall Munetsi pulled one back for Zimbabwe in the 72nd minute. Four minutes later, Tawanda Chirewa equalized before Munetsi completed Zimbabwe’s comeback with an 88th-minute winner.

Sierra Leone went from being two goals ahead to leaving the match empty-handed.

The defeat was especially damaging because it was the team’s opening game of the qualifying campaign.

There was little time to recover before another crucial match arrived.

Against Equatorial Guinea on Monday, Sierra Leone found themselves behind almost immediately.

Loren Zuniga scored inside the first minute to give Equatorial Guinea the lead in the neutral venue in Yaoundé.

According to the Confederation of African Football, Sierra Leone subsequently had more possession and created more chances, but they were unable to find the goal that would have brought them back into the match.

The final whistle confirmed another 1-0 defeat.

For a team hoping to return to the continent’s biggest football tournament, two matches have now produced two defeats.

What Does the Table Say?

The Group E situation is becoming increasingly difficult for the Leone Stars.

After two rounds of matches, DR Congo sits at the top of the group with six points after winning both of their games.

Zimbabwe and Equatorial Guinea are on three points each, while Sierra Leone is at the bottom with zero points.

DR Congo strengthened their position by beating Zimbabwe 2-1 in Harare on Monday. Yoane Wissa scored before setting up Samuel Moutoussamy for DR Congo’s second goal. Zimbabwe pulled one back through Munetsi in stoppage time, but could not find an equaliser.

The result leaves Sierra Leone three points behind the teams currently occupying second and third place.

Is Qualification Still Possible?

The situation is difficult, but the Leone Stars are not mathematically eliminated.

Group E consists of four teams playing six matches each. The top two teams qualify for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, while Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda are already guaranteed places as co-hosts.

Sierra Leone have played only two of their six matches. That leaves four games and a maximum of 12 points still available.

The immediate task, however, is clear. The Leone Stars must start collecting points.

With Zimbabwe and Equatorial Guinea currently on three points, Sierra Leone are only three points away from the teams occupying second and third place.

But the margin for further mistakes has become smaller. Another defeat would make the road considerably more difficult, while a victory in the next round could immediately bring Sierra Leone back into the conversation.

The remaining fixtures therefore take on greater importance.

What Does This Mean for Didier Gomes Da Rosa?

The pressure is now on Didier Gomes Da Rosa.

The French coach was appointed with a three-year contract and a clear mandate to guide Sierra Leone towards qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

His first competitive campaign with the Leone Stars has therefore started with two defeats.

But the two matches have also presented two different stories.

Against Zimbabwe, Sierra Leone showed enough quality to establish a 2-0 lead before losing control of the game.

Against Equatorial Guinea, the Leone Stars conceded almost immediately but then created opportunities without finding the equaliser.

That means the new coach now has to find a way to turn promising periods of play into results.

The next four matches will provide more evidence of how his team responds to this difficult beginning.
