Here Are The Top 5 Sierra Leonean Weddings We’ve Loved Through The Years

Weddings have always been some of our favourite stories to tell. Over the years, SwitSalone has had the privilege of documenting beautiful Sierra Leonean unions that brought families together, honoured culture, and celebrated love.

As we prepare to relaunch our wedding series, we are taking a moment to look back at some of the unforgettable weddings we have covered throughout the years. From intimate ceremonies to grand celebrations, these weddings captured the joy, tradition, and the beauty of saying ‘I do’ surrounded by community.

Here are five weddings that caught our eye and made our Sierra Leonean wedding traditions stand out.

Cynthia Okoe and Mershack Okoe

Cynthia and Mershack Okoe

Cynthia and Mershack’s wedding was a stunning celebration of love that beautifully blended Ghanaian and Sierra Leonean cultures. Their story began at a friend’s birthday party, one Mershack arrived two hours late to, but not before convincing Cynthia to stay back for a conversation. They exchanged words and went their separate ways but fate stepped in six months later when Mershack reappeared with a mission: to teach Cynthia how to dance Azonto.

On the Easter holiday of 2015, Mershack proposed to Cynthia in front of their family and friends and later that November 14th, 2015, they got married in Jacksonville, Florida. The wedding boasted of vintage glam theme of Ghanaian and Sierra Leonean themes which included wearing Ghanaian traditional garments, dining on mixed cuisines from both cultures, and taking the dance floor with West African hits.

Emmanuel and Sarran Nunoo

Emmanuel and Sarran Nunoo

Sarran and Emmanuel’s love story began in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada where they met and built a relationship that would span seven meaningful years. After years of growing together, the couple decided it was time to take the next step and walk down the aisle.

Their wedding took place at the Palace Banquet Hall in Edmonton, a beautiful summer celebration dressed in soft coral and grey tones that perfectly complemented the season. This was a heartfelt Sierra Leonean wedding that celebrated love, patience, and the joy of finally saying “I do.”

Akieboya Rowe and Diana Mansaray

Akieboya Rowe and Diana Mansaray’s love story had been quietly unfolding long before they officially met. Though they lived in the same community for over 15 years and shared mutual friends, fate waited for the perfect moment; one that arrived through Akieboya’s daughter, Makie.

When Makie refused to return home and spent a week at Diana’s home, a bond formed between her father and Diana. After dropping off Makie at her father’s garage, the bond grew stronger as Akieboya received Diana at his place with a broad smile. That was the first time Diana and Akieboya met face to face even though everyone in their community knew Akieboya had always had a thing for Diana. From that moment, everything fell into place for them and the two decided to tie the knot.

The couple got married on February 14th, 2015, Valentine’s Day, at Buxton Methodist Church, with loved ones later gathering to celebrate at the Lac Villa Guest House. It was a fitting beginning for a love story that had been years in the making.

Kei and Kristen Kamara

When Sierra Leonean football star Kei Kamara married his longtime love, Kristen in Kansas City in 2014, half the girls in Sierra Leone got heartbroken that day. The couple, who had been together for sometime, began married life surrounded by love, family, and friends.

Years on, Kei and Kristin have continued to build a life together, balancing family, football, and everyday moments that matter most. A reminder that beyond the fame and spotlight, love is the greatest win.
