Antoine Semenyo has become the most expensive Ghanaian player in history following his £62.5 million transfer from AFC Bournemouth to Manchester City.

The deal, confirmed by both clubs on Monday, sets a new Ghanaian transfer record. It’s the seventh most expensive football transfer for an African footballer.

Bournemouth announced the transfer in a statement shared on their official social media platforms, confirming that the 24-year-old completed the move for a club-record fee.

“We can confirm that @antoinesemenyo has joined Manchester City for a club-record fee. Everyone at AFC Bournemouth wishes you nothing but the best, Ant ❤️,” the club wrote.

Semenyo joined Bournemouth in January 2023 and quickly became a key figure in The Cherries league success over the years.

The 26-year-old penned a five-and-a-half-year deal with City, which will see him stay at Manchester City through to 2031.

Semenyo is known for his pace, physical strength and eye for goal.

Semenyo’s last season’s performances in the Premier League and his good form this season attracted interest from several top clubs, including Liverpool and Manchester United, before Manchester City secured his signature.

His transfer to City surpasses the previous record for a Ghanaian player held by Mohamed Kudus, who was bought from Ajax by Tottenham in a £55 million deal.

My time at Bournemouth. Where do I even begin? Family. Growth. Memories I’ll cherish forever. Thank you to everyone who made this journey so special,” said Semenyo on X

Semenyo was born in London to Ghanaian parents. He started his professional football career at Bristol City.

At Bristol, he was loaned to Bath City, Newport County and Sunderland before finally spotted by Bournemouth in 2022.

He signed for Bournemouth, a Premier League side, midway through the 2022/23 season, and quickly became one of the Premier League’s most exciting and sought-after wingers.

Semenyo made 110 appearances for Bournemouth, scoring 32 goals and registering 13 assists across all competitions.
