Ambassador Amara Sowa to Keynote at the 2025 Sierra Leone Diaspora Investment Conference

Ambassador Amara S.M. Sowa, Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to the U.S, will give the welcome keynote at the upcoming Sierra Leone Diaspora Investment Conference at the Silver Spring Civic Centre, Maryland. 

Ambassador Amara Sheikh Mohammed Sowa is Sierra Leone’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the United States, with concurrent accreditation to Canada, Brazil, and Bahamas, Guyana, Jamaica, Chile, Bolivia, and Trinidad & Tobago.

A seasoned diplomat and public servant, he previously served as Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, where he focused on political affairs, peacebuilding, education, climate change, and women’s empowerment. He also played a key role during Sierra Leone’s tenure on the UN Security Council.

Before his diplomatic career, Ambassador Sowa led Sierra Leone’s flagship Free Quality School Education programme (2018-2022), laying the groundwork for national education reform. His earlier roles include work in decentralisation with the World Bank’s Institutional Reform and Capacity Building Project and leadership positions in NGOs such as PLAN international and Leonard Cheshire Disability. 

An educator at heart, he served as a high school teacher, university lecturer, and administrator. He holds a BA in English and an MA in Development from Fourah Bay College and Njala University. Ambassador Sowa is married with three children.
