What was the 2025 MET Gala About
This year’s theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” paid tribute to the cultural influence of Black Dandyism. The exhibit focused exclusively on menswear for the first time since 2003 and examined how fashion has shaped black identities across the Atlantic diaspora.
Dandyism as a culture that can be traced to the 1700s, when during the Atlantic Slave Trade, there was “a trend of fashionably dressed or dandyfied servants,” says Superfine’s co-curator Monica L. Miller on the MET’s website.

Black Dandyism came out as an effort to gain respect in a racist and prejudiced society Black Dandyism can be characterised by zoot suits which featured long suit jackets with padded shoulders and wide-legged baggy dress pants. Popular among jazz musicians, activists and black men in Harlem during the 1930s, the look became a symbol of cultural pride and resilience.
According to Clarissa Esguerra, a curator at LACMA, told the Los Angeles Times, the zoot suit is “considered the first uniquely American suit,” with deep roots in black history.
The MET Gala, held annually on the first Monday in May, is more than a celebrity fashion spectacle. It is a major fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City. This year, it served as a vibrant celebration of creativity, identity, and black excellence through the lens of fashion.
