According to a press release from State House, Dr. Chernor Abass Bundu, the Speaker of Sierra Leone’s sixth parliament, has announced his retirement effective April 30, 2024, citing health reasons.

He served as the speaker since the fifth parliament in 2018.

However, there were speculations suggesting discussions about his removal. Recently, Hon. Mohamed Bangura of the opposition APC accused the Speaker of excluding him from the Sierra Leone delegation to the ECOWAS Parliament.

He later prompted threats of legal action, which he later retracted in favor of seeking divine intervention.

“Ah lef me case to God,” he said.

Sources suggest that ruling SLPP Members of Parliament were dissatisfied with the Speaker’s actions, leading to discussions with President Julius Maada Bio to address their concerns.

President Maada Bio has accepted his retirement, and Hon. Segapoh Solomon Thomas, the Deputy Speaker, has been presiding over the Parliamentary sitting lately.
