Nollywood Icon Mr Ibu Dies at 62
Nigeria mourns the passing of the beloved Nollywood icon, John Okafor, also known as Mr Ibu, who has passed away at the age of 62.
“With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Mr Ibu,” shared Emeka Rollas, President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, on Saturday, revealing that the actor died due to a cardiac arrest.
Okafor gained prominence two decades ago with his portrayal in the film “Mr Ibu,” earning him the enduring moniker. His comedic prowess in the role remains celebrated as a standout in Nigerian cinema.
Over the years, he graced numerous Nollywood productions, leaving an indelible mark with performances in films like “Keziah,” “9 Wives,” and “Mr Ibu in London.”
“Rest in peace, sir,” expressed actress Mercy Johnson-Okojie in her tribute, while former UN rapporteur Joy Ezeilo described him as a “cherished” personality who brought joy to many.
Reports indicate that Okafor passed away at a hospital in Lagos state, though the specific details remain undisclosed.
The actor’s health struggles came to public attention last year, culminating in the amputation of one of his legs in November, following a crowdfunding campaign to cover his medical expenses.
However, his final years were marred by turmoil, with his son Daniel Okafor and adopted daughter Jasmine Chioma facing allegations of embezzlement, accused of misappropriating $60,700 (£47,800) from him.
Following their arrest in January, the duo has remained silent, awaiting their next court appearance scheduled for March 11.
Described as “tumultuous” by Nigeria’s Punch newspaper, Okafor’s later life was marked by claims of multiple attempts on his life through poisoning.
