Idris Elba Formally Knighted by King Charles III at Windsor Castle

British actor, musician, and activist of Sierra Leonean and Ghanaian descent, Idris Elba, now ‘Sir Idris Elba’, has been officially knighted by King Charles III during an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle on Tuesday, June 3, 2026.
The 53-year-old megastar actor received one of the United Kingdom’s highest achievements in recognition of his extensive, life-changing services to young people.
During the traditional ceremony, the King touched a sword to Elba’s shoulders to officially confirm the knighthood, a moment quickly shared across social media.
“Congratulations to everyone who received honours today at Windsor Castle, hosted by the King,” Elba shared online following the prestigious event.
The star also posted a picture alongside his wife, Sabrina Elba, showcasing his new medal and expressing gratitude for the massive recognition.
“We are grateful. The work continues,” he noted, tagging their charitable organization, the Elba Hope Foundation, which they co-founded back in 2022.

While Sir Idris’ knighthood was initially announced in the 2026 New Year Honours list, the formal investiture brings his royal relationship completely full circle.
As a teenager growing up in East London, Elba received a crucial grant from The King’s Trust at 18 that allowed him to launch his acting career.
Reflecting on the honor, Elba shared that the recognition is deeply meaningful precisely because it highlights his long dedication to community projects.

For the global icon, this monumental achievement serves as a direct message of hope to underprivileged communities across the UK and beyond.
He dedicated the award to every regular kid with a dream, stating that his journey proves a normal boy from East London can truly become a knight.
Sir Idris plans to use his platform to work closely with government leaders to combat street violence and secure funding for school music programs.
