Cashless Salone: How Diaspora’s Can Make Easy Payments in Sierra Leone

Digital technology is changing how Sierra Leoneans pay for goods and services.
Banks, fintech companies and mobile money operators now offer alternatives to cash for selected transactions. These options can help customers pay bills, shop and manage expenses with greater convenience.
From QR-code payments to bank cards and online platforms, customers have more ways to complete transactions. Digital payments can also provide receipts and transaction records, helping people track their spending. For Sierra Leoneans abroad, the right service could make paying eligible expenses back home easier.
Diaspora members may need to settle school fees, pay household bills or cover business expenses from overseas. However, not every service operates internationally, and fees or eligibility requirements can differ. Understanding each provider’s offer helps customers choose a payment method that suits their needs.
Digital payments are opening new ways for Sierra Leoneans to pay for goods and services. From bank cards and mobile banking to QR codes and online platforms, here are some of the options available—and what they offer to people at home and abroad.
Rokel Sim Korpor Payment Made Easier

Rokel Commercial Bank’s Sim Korpor application gives customers digital access to selected banking services. Its Korpor Pass feature allows users to pay participating merchants by scanning their QR codes. Customers enter the amount, verify the payment details and authorise the transaction.
The application also supports selected household bill payments, including EDSA electricity and DSTV. Customers can use it to transfer funds between Rokel accounts or to accounts at other banks. These features bring several everyday banking tasks together in one application.
Korpor eCheque provides another option for recipients who do not hold Rokel bank accounts. The sender initiates the transaction, and the recipient collects the funds through a Sim Korpor agent. Collection requires the transaction code and password.
What does this mean for the diaspora?
Sim Korpor helps diaspora members manage selected expenses and payments involving Sierra Leone. However, customers should confirm whether they can register and transact from abroad. They should also check applicable fees, transaction limits and any local requirements with Rokel Commercial Bank.

Vult offers virtual and physical prepaid Visa cards for online purchases and eligible payments. Customers can use them for services such as Amazon, Shein and Netflix, subject to acceptance. The virtual card supports online transactions without requiring a physical card.
During an interview, Vult Fintech Agency Project Manager and Support Lead Iris Olu-Williams highlighted the convenience of card payments. She explained that cards can reduce the need to carry large amounts of cash. She also noted that Vult cards allow users to hold substantial amounts, subject to applicable limits.
Vult cardholders can withdraw cash at supported ATMs in Sierra Leone and internationally. The provider lists SLCB, Rokel Commercial Bank and GTBank for local ATM access. Withdrawal availability, fees and limits depend on the card and ATM used.
Vult also supports QR-based payments where available, offering another way to pay participating merchants. Its app lets customers freeze or unfreeze their cards and receive transaction alerts. Spending information and card controls help users monitor activity and respond to suspicious transactions.
What does this mean for the diaspora?
Vult may suit Sierra Leoneans who need a card for eligible online purchases or international payments. Before relying on it abroad, users should verify card acceptance, currency availability and charges. They should also confirm which local payment services and merchants currently accept Vult.

The OM Mastercard is a prepaid virtual card linked to an Orange Money account in supported markets. It is designed for international online shopping, digital subscriptions and travel bookings. Users can make eligible online payments without needing a physical card.
Customers fund the card through the supported Orange Money process before spending. As a prepaid option, the available balance and transaction limits determine how much they can pay. Its digital format makes it particularly relevant to people who regularly purchase services online.
For Sierra Leoneans in the diaspora, the OM Mastercard offers a digital way to handle international online payments, from shopping and subscriptions to travel bookings. By linking eligible services to their Orange Money account, users can manage these purchases conveniently without needing a physical card.
UBA Visa Card: Payments Beyond Cash

UBA Visa Debit Card
UBA’s Visa Debit Card connects directly to a customer’s savings or current account. It allows cardholders to pay at supported merchants and withdraw cash from compatible ATMs. The card gives customers access to funds without requiring cash for every purchase.
UBA also offers prepaid card options, which customers fund before making transactions. Unlike debit cards, prepaid cards do not necessarily require a traditional bank account. Available features depend on the specific card issued by UBA Sierra Leone.
For online purchases, customers can use eligible UBA cards at merchants that accept the relevant card network. UBA also operates Instant Bills Pay, a separate online platform for selected bills and service payments. The platform supports Visa, MasterCard and Verve, and provides electronic receipts and transaction notifications.
What This Means for the Diaspora
UBA’s card services may help diaspora members pay for eligible online purchases and services. However, international use depends on the particular card, merchant acceptance and applicable restrictions. Customers should ask UBA Sierra Leone about eligibility, foreign-currency transactions, fees and overseas access before relying on the card.
With these platforms made available, diasporans who choose to be in Sierra Leone this December have a good number of efficient payment systems to choose from.
