The United States Embassy in Freetown has on Monday, 23 February, 2026, announced on its Facebook page that the application portal for the Fulbright Master’s Scholarship Program is now open, offering Sierra Leonean students the opportunity to pursue fully funded graduate studies in the United States, for the 2027/2028 academic year.

The Fulbright Program academic exchange program is a fully sponsored academic scholarship program by the U.S. government. 

It’s one of the world’s most prestigious international academic exchange initiatives, designed to promote mutual relations between the United States and other countries through educational and cultural exchange.

Under the program, selected Sierra Leonean students with an undergraduate degree will undertake Master’s degree studies at accredited universities across the United States. 

Upon completion of their studies, recipients are expected to return to Sierra Leone to contribute to national development and institutional strengthening.

Scholarship Coverage

The scholarship provides comprehensive financial support, including:

  • Full tuition and academic fees
  • Living expenses
  • Round-trip international travel
  • Health insurance coverage

The Fulbright scholarship program targets individuals who demonstrate strong academic performance, leadership potential, and a commitment to public service.

Application Process and Deadline

Applications are now open through the U.S. Embassy in Sierra Leone Fulbright Program online portal.

The deadline for submission is April 5 at 11:59 p.m. local time.

Prospective applicants are encouraged to begin preparations early to compile required documentation, including academic transcripts, letters of recommendation, and a personal statement outlining their academic and professional goals.

The Fulbright Master’s Scholarship emphasises leadership, civic engagement, and long-term impact. 

According to program guidelines, successful candidates are expected to use the knowledge and skills gained in the United States to promote innovation, strengthen institutions, and support socio-economic development in Sierra Leone.
