Idris accepted the accolade “on behalf of the many young people whose talent, ambition and resilience have driven the work of the Elba Hope Foundation.”

In his statement following his knighthood announcement, Idris urges sustainable support for young people, urging continued attention and resources to help young people find alternatives to violence and disenfranchisement.

The New Year Honours List, an annual tradition dating back many decades, recognises outstanding British figures from diverse fields including the arts, sports, politics and public service.

More than 1,150 individuals were honoured this year. Alongside Elba, several other notable figures were recognised for their achievements.

British actress and singer Cynthia Erivo was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for her services to music and drama, while Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean, legendary Olympic ice dancers, received damehood and knighthood respectively for their contributions to sport.
