Africell Sierra Leone has boosted the country’s under-16 basketball team by providing vital financial assistance to make sure they take part in the FIBA U16 AfroBasket 2025 in Kigali, Rwanda.
The tournament runs from September 2–14, 2025, with 12 national teams competing. The top two finalists will qualify for the FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup 2026 in Turkey.
Africell’s contribution matched funds raised through a nationwide campaign, which the Sierra Leone Basketball Federation (SLBF) said was critical in covering travel, equipment, and preparation costs.
“From the very beginning, Africell has been instrumental–providing equipment, financial resources, and now once again stepping in to make sure these young athletes represent our country on the continental stage,” said SLBF President Ali Hijazi.
Africell’s Media Relations Manager, Abdul Karim Sesay, explained that the company’s backing of sports is part of its wider corporate social responsibility.
“Supporting sports is more than just competition. It is a source of motivation, a symbol of patriotism, and a beacon of hope for these young boys who see basketball as a means to success,” Sesay said.
The Sierra Leone U-16 boys arrived safely in Rwanda on September 3, 2025. Just hours later, on September 4, they played their opening match against basketball giants Ivory Coast.
It was a tough start for the young team, as they were heavily beaten 112–27. The defeat was disappointing, but there were important lessons to take away. The boys had arrived in Kigali less than 10 hours before the game, after weeks of uncertainty and constraints, which made their preparation especially difficult.
Despite the result, many see the team’s participation as a victory on its own. They had already lifted spirits back home by winning gold at the regional qualifiers in Guinea, and now they are gaining valuable experience competing against Africa’s best. The players remain determined to give their all in the tournament.
