Sierra Leone’s national team, Leones Stars, settled for a 1-1 draw with Chad in their Group G AFCON qualifiers game. The result of last night’s clash leaves Leone Stars’ hopes of reaching Morocco uncertain.
Leone Stars, despite having played an extra match, still sit behind second-place Zambia. Group leaders, Cote D’ Ivoire will play Zambia for their return leg clash on November 15th, 2024. Leone stars will be hoping for a Cote D’ Ivoire win for a chance of making it to the AFCON tournament.
A Determined Leone Stars versus a resilient Chad Side in the AFCON Qualifiers
With eyes on a place in Morocco, Leone Stars were firmly on the front foot in last night’s AFCON Qualifiers. They enjoyed nearly 70% of the possession.
In the 29th minute, Abu Dumbuya got the opener for the visitors with a well-placed strike. Chad gave a quick response. Four minutes later they were back on level terms courtesy of a confidently taken penalty by Mahamat Thiam.
Leone Stars went close to restoring their lead with a low shot from Kei Kamara that went wide.
The Lions continued pushing for a decisive goal but Chad maintained a solid backline to earn a point at full time.
Improvements Seen Despite Disappointing Results
Despite dropping crucial points, Leone Stars showed improvement in their dominance, attempts on goal and chances created. The momentum which saw them defeat defending champions Ivory Coast was once again evident.
They can book a spot at AFCON next year depending on two things; a win for Ivory Coast in tomorrow’s fixture and a win for Leone Stars in the final day could seal the deal.
