As of September 11, 2023, a total of 22 out of the expected 24 participating countries have secured their spots in the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
The host nation, Ivory Coast, was the first to secure their place and has been automatically placed in Group A as the seeded team. Teams such as Nigeria’s Super Eagles, Algeria, Senegal, and Morocco had already secured their spots in the tournament ahead of the September deadline, despite the postponement of Morocco’s final AFCON qualifier due to a recent earthquake in their country.
On Thursday, September 7, 2023, Ghana, Angola, and Tanzania also clinched their spots in the tournament through thrilling qualification rounds. The latest addition to the list of qualified teams for the 2023 AFCON is The Gambia, which secured its place with a draw against Congo Brazzaville in the earthquake-affected city of Marrakesh on Sunday night.
As it currently stands, there are still two available spots, which will be determined after the Cameroon vs. Burundi match on Tuesday, September 12. Two of the three teams, Cameroon, Namibia, or Burundi, are expected to fill these remaining spots.
