Gambian officials have announced the arrest of a Sierra Leonean national concerning the murder of Shakina Chinedu, a 60-year-old British citizen.
Augustine Bangura, the suspect, was apprehended after the demise of Chinedu. She had been residing in The Gambia since 2017 and was tragically discovered dead in a toilet drain in Madina Alagie, a village near Mamuda in Kombo South.
The police reported that substantial evidence, comprising a pistol, hammer, spade, money, and keys, was recovered from the suspect. Commissioner Boto Keita, addressing reporters at a news conference held at Kairaba Police Station, stated, “The suspect admitted to the crime during police interrogation and subsequently guided authorities to retrieve the belongings he had stolen after the tragic murder of Madam Chinedu.”
In a related update, two suspects, a Gambian and another Sierra Leonean, were arrested and charged in connection with a robbery in Fajara that occurred the previous week. The police noted that many crimes in the country are committed by foreign nationals, highlighting a concerning trend.
However, the suspect will be brought before a court soon for trial for the crime he allegedly committed.
