Applications for the ninth edition of the BBC News Komla Dumor Award are now open. This annual award seeks to identify and honour promising talent in African journalism, spotlighting emerging voices from the continent.
The recipient of the award will have the opportunity to spend three months at the BBC headquarters in London, where they will enhance their skills and gain invaluable experience.
Established in tribute to Komla Dumor, an outstanding Ghanaian broadcaster and BBC World News presenter who tragically passed away at 41 a decade ago, the award carries profound significance.
Dumor was renowned for his advocacy of robust and dynamic journalism, as well as his dedication to providing comprehensive and authentic coverage of African stories, leaving a lasting impression on Africa and the world.
He was the host of Focus on Africa, the BBC’s inaugural daily English-language TV news program tailored for African audiences, which aired on BBC World News. He was also a prominent presenter for BBC World News’ European morning segment. Dumor joined the BBC in 2007 following a decade-long career in broadcast journalism in Ghana, where he was honoured with the Ghana Journalist of the Year award, he hosted Network Africa on BBC World Service between 2007 and 2009 before joining The World Today program.
In 2009, he became the inaugural host of the African business news program on BBC World News, Africa Business Report, travelling across the continent to meet with top entrepreneurs and report on the latest business developments. In 2013, Dumor was recognized as one of the 100 most influential Africans by New African magazine.
The recipient of last year’s award was Ghanaian news anchor Paa Kwesi Asare, hailing from Ghana. During his tenure, Asare travelled to Kenya to report on the initiative to transition the country’s “boda boda” motorbike taxis to electric power, departing from traditional petrol or diesel usage.
