You omitted the most significant one of all, Borbor Belleh By Emerson – it was the first revolutionary song to make a breakthrough and really put the authorities on red alert.
By the way, even the then speaker of parliament, Justice Edmond Cowan was so incensed by the song that he said the law should act against Emerson for songs like that.
Simply put, Borboh Belleh was the catalyst for what came to be known as revolutionary songs in Sierra Leone, it prompted many other musician such as Extra O, Jungle Leaders and others to sing more of revo songs

I had a very unfortunate experience here. The price was changed for my infant twins (from Le700k to Le900k). In all the previous meetings stating the age and development of my children, that increased price was not written or stated anywhere. What’s more, is that the price was not being increased for everyone, just my 10 month olds, while this website clearly states that the academy is for infants to pre-school. My husband and I are most disappointed. For those of you who know of my writing, I will continue my comments on the Expat blogs.

    Sir Samuel Coleridge-Taylor
    our unsung Hero
    1875 – 1912
    CENTENARY FESTIVAL

I attended the World premier of The opera Thelma, by Sir Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, which was performed by the Surrey Opera at the Ashcroft Theatre, Croydon, on Thursday 9th February 2012. This work was for a long time believed to be lost or destroyed; it was miscatalogued in the British Library, and unearthed by Dr Catherine Carr, in the course of research for her PhD thesis. The Mayor, Councillor Graham Bass, and Lady Mayoress together with the Festival Patron , Sir John Tomlinson CBE attended. Also present in the audience was Mrs Florence Bangalie who is Head of Chancery at the Sierra Leone High Commission, and a few other Sierra Leoneans taking part in a year long Festival during this Centenary year of Celebration of the composer’s life, and work. HE Mr Edward M Turay is appointed a Vice President of the Festival.
The story of Thelma is presented as a Norse myth; good triumphs over evil and true love reigns (in the Romantic tradition).
    Synopsis
Thelma is the daughter of King Olaf; she is in love with Earl Eric and he is in love with her. A bad man, Carl, also wants to marry Thelma. King Olaf wants her to marry Carl. Another lady, Gudrun, is in love with Carl.
King Olaf sets a challenge for Thelma’s two suitors: she will marry the man who recovers a golden goblet that he lost to the sea where it is held in a kingdom of fearsome but good-natured sea necks. But it is necessary to pass through a dangerous maelstrom to reach that kingdom.
Eric’s fairy godmother gives him an amulet to protect him on his journey. Carl steals it from him but Gudrun, knowing its story, returns it to Eric. Carl, assuming that Eric will be killed without the amulet’s protection, tells the King that Eric is dead and Carl’s wedding to Thelma is arranged.
Meanwhile, Eric gets the golden goblet and returns it to the King just in time before the marriage takes place. King Olaf arranges for Eric and Thelma to wed instead. Carl tries to kill Eric but Gudrun interposes herself and she is killed instead. Carl is carried off. Eric marries Thelma and everybody is happy.
    about Samuel Coleridge-Taylor
Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, a Black man, was one of the foremost English composers of his generation.
His father was Dr Daniel Peter Hughes from Sierra Leone. He trained in England as a doctor and worked as a GP with a senior partner; when the senior partner died, he inevitably lost most of his patients and returned to Sierra Leone. Meanwhile, 18 year old Alice Martin gave birth to his son in August 1857, and with her father’s support raised S C-T including his training at the Royal College of Music in London.
Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was a founding organiser of the Pan African Congress in London in 1900. In Washington DC, the “Samuel Coleridge-Taylor Choral Society” was formed by around 200 Black singers to perform his work. They sponsored his first trip to the USA.
As well as being a prolific composer, he was for periods of his life the “chief conductor” of the Croydon Symphony Orchestra and the Rochester Choral Society and he lectured at Trinity College of Music and the Guildhall School of Music.
He died of pneumonia at the age of 37.
His work was incredibly popular in the U.K. before the Second World War: the Royal Albert Hall held an annual costumed production of his Song of Hiawatha choral trilogy conducted by Sir Malcolm Sargent. His work went out of fashion after 1945.
Educated in composition at the Royal College of Music under C. V. Stanford in the same year as Gustav Holst and Ralph Vaughan Williams, his music is very much English music of that period. The Music scholar can hear, in Thelma, influences of Dvorak, Mahler, Wagner and Delius professionally delivered by the lead Lady Joanna Weeks and a stalwart cast of excellent voices. As an untrained thespian, and a pioneer of operatic performances of the Freetown Choral Society of yore, I enjoyed the production immensely and found that S C-T had his own distinctive style of composition; the choreography was impeccable, but I missed leaving with a memorable tune or song. The high standard of the production was due in no small measure to the Artist Director, Christopher Cowell, and the Conductor, Jonathan Butcher GRSM ARSM LRAM. How I yearned that we could boast such an orchestra in Sierra Leone, or even a much smaller group! I anticipate that the Ballanta Academy will recognise this great son of our land, and also celebrate his Centenary year in an appropriate manner. There is no doubt that we should all be especially proud of this famous countryman with family connections such as our most renowned ex-Mayor of Freetown 1948-54, Alderman Eustace Henry Taylor Cummings CBE, and I strongly believer that any posthumous National Honour would seem an obvious reward for his timely achievements setting Sierra Leone so firmly on the World stage those many decades ago.

I desperately need to amend my REview published above, as Samuel Coleridge Taylor did not live long enough to me made a Knight of the Realm! He probably would have become Sir Coleridge Taylor, deservedly, one day. So, please de.ete “Sir” from the title, and also from the first line! I hope you can.

There is of course a tremendous difference between what I just saw here, and what I experienced in Sierra Leone. Foreigners dominate every ounce of trade in the country, Freetown is overcrowded, filthy and confused. Poverty abounds in its extremity, law and order is non existent, why in God’s name would the government allow okada’s which to me is an accident waiting to happen to roam dangerously with absolutely no boundries within which to operate. What is the difference between an investor and a reap off exploiter? What in the world is going on in that country?

It is mind boggling to me that this guy would make such a ridiculous statement that has no basis in fact. It is a statement that is clearly a convenient afterthought, no doubt geared towards obtaining asylum, that he would now claim fear of prosecution should he return to Sierra Leone. As reported, he was in Sierra Leone last year. Had the government had any designs to arrest or prosecute him, it would have done so then; it would not have waited until now– when his ability to visit/stay in America is revoked — to do so. It is shameful, if not bothering on treason, that he would soil his mother land in a foreign country for his own benefit. As one commenter mentioned or implied, when has this government arrested any artist because such artist made a song critical of its policies? If more talented men like Emmerson can freely live in Sierra Leone, despite having made songs critical of this government, why would this clown not be able to do the same? Here is some free advise, Mr. Reggae man: If this ridiculous statement of yours was made on the advise of counsel, go back and get whatever money you gave him/her becuase his/her law degree, based on this advise, is not worth the paper that it is printed on. Here is another free advise, genius (not): You have a body of work out there. It is that body of work that would be looked at, juxtaposing it with similarly situated individuals (that is, other artists that have made similar or same songs critical of the government) that your petition will be judged by. By the way, don’t even think about seeking asylum in the United States now that you are in Australia because U.S. immigration laws clearly presume you to be safe in whatever country you are now in (Australia) outside of your home country. Your best bet is to seek asylum down under (Australia). I hear our abroginee (phonetic) brothers and sisters love reggae music. You can entertain them. Just make sure that you don’t throw them under the bus as you just did your motherland.

As a lawyer that pracitces inthe area of immigration law i say, leave this man alone to seek asylum anywhere he chooses. He is dpoing what he needs to do to get where he wants to get to. I see nothing wrong with that. immigraion personnel are trained to ferret out nonsenseical applications.

Well i mean a part of me thinks that his statement maybe an exaggeration of the truth. if you remember the last time that those guys were here it was during the Dec RFM/Black Leo rubbish that was going on (Machetes in the streets). and unfortunately Dry Yai crew was def caught up in that (by virtue of being musicians), i don’t know how much of it was due to the Govt tho. but at that time the Govt was pretty harsh to all members of the music industry. there were heavy fines placed on their promoters not to mention losses due to the cancellation of shows (everyone was pissed). they were left with no money and even had problems finding a place to stay (they stayed with my family a couple of nights). after all of the loses with their management/promoters they had no money to get back to the states, they appealed to the Govt for help and were turned away… they struggled to find their way until the ban was lifted, did a few shows and i assume made enough money to get back to the states. needless to say, they left with a bitter taste in their mouths and i do know for a fact that there were some confrontations with Govt officials. now do i think that those confrontations mean that Mr. Daramy can not come back to live in SL… ?? Further more lets be honest, lots of people are afraid of election time, not just here in SL but in any African country, and for my case i present the past two years of elections in West Africa. No country held elections with out bloodshed, NONE. and SL is no different our elections are still a few months away and already there has been blood shed on two separate occasions.

Well, this is simple for the US immigration authorities. Check with the US embassy in Freetown, where I am writing from. Freedom of expression, among many others, is highly respected by the previous government and the present government in Freetown. You only need to read our newspapers and listen to our radio stations or even our television, which was transformed into a public broadcaster by the present government, where freedom of expression is exhibited every now and then. Too bad an excuse, Daramy.

These comments are so interesting. First off I believe the publisher
of the article has the right to publish whatever they want. She is not
the first person to publish this, so whats the issue?

Second off, to Victoria Sesay, its very interesting on your breakdown
of what hapepend with Dry Yai Crew in Sierra Leone, but unfortunately
your account is incorrect. I know the first hand account of it, and
they didnt hustle until they got enough money to get back to the
states, it really had more to do with technicalities than actually
money. As I can say for a fact because I know how the situation
transpired, I have accounts from the promoters you speak about, from
the actual record label, and from the members themselves. I am sorry
to branch off topic but I think it is important as many of us like to
analyze a situation when we are not 100 percent sure of it.

Third off, the name calling is so uncalled for and most of the
individuals commenting do not know this individual person nor their
circumstance and it is very disrespectful to refer to soembody as an
    “idiot”.

Lastly, I would like to see what some of us would do or say if we were
in this position? If you were in a different country and just suddenly
told that your visa was banned and revoked, would you all wilfully go
back to Sierra Leone? Would you all turn yourself in to immigration
officials at the end of your visa and voluntarily deport yourself. Or
would you all do or say whatever you have to do to stay in the
country, be it the US or any other developed country? We as Sierra
Leoneans need to be real with ourself and stop looking at things from
    one dimension.

    • Victoria Sesay 28 February, 2012 at 19:59 Reply

@ YKJ i agree with you, that we should look at stories from different dimensions, if you read my post closely you can see that i said “i assume” that that is what they had to do. And any thing else that i stated in my post i heard from the horses mouths, as i also stated in my post, they stayed at my house a few nights… so if they were lying to me then *insert ‘Ye’ shrug*. I was just trying to present a different dimension to the argument that he is an “idot” cause i felt a lot of people forgot about the events of last year and thought that Dry Yai’s trip was all fun and games. weather it was money, technical difficulties, or what ever; they had some type of issues last time that ‘could possibly’ be the reason he doesn’t want to come back. now am i in his head? was i at the boarder with him? NO… just giving my thoughts.
I also totally agree with you on your last point about being real, if you are in that situation you don’t know what you would do. and like i said people are afraid to come back to SL especially during this election time (i personally may find myself on vacation in a neighboring country if things get too hot). i don’t look down on him for what he said tho. Many Many people (some of our own friends and family I’m sure) have said much worse things about SL to get a green card / stay in another country. *you gotta do what you gotta do* His statements just came out because he is a public figure. Should he take a bashing for doing the same thing that millions of SL expats have done in the past and are still doing today? Shoot i know if i was in a jam i would say some stuff real quick about being a marginalized woman.. lol no but on a more serious note, its just a blog no one get upset it’s just news put your comments and move on. like our friend from the embassy said SL is currently embracing freedom of speech. lets enjoy it 🙂

There both stupid , to dis his own country is so insulting . For her to say its because he is Muslim is ridiculous . No government revokes visas due to race or hearsay everything gets investigated there not being honest there is much more to this story than they are saying . For his girlfriend to be on a ” no fly ” list also , that proves race and religion has nothing to do with this ….. They have broken the law they are guilty of something , it is ” very fishy ” just like she claims.
Everyone knows there are lawyers that work on pro bono if they can trust there clients , but yet there begging for everyone else’s money , i’m guessing because no Lawyer will take there case as they can see the very many holes this story has.

Excellent exposure of a society that has tremendous historical clout, but also one that has been gutted by political tsunamis, whose epicentre emanates from a constant collision of tribal plates that are forever shifting against the interest of a paradise that for the moment is completely lost. How does one synthesize these positive efforts with the reality of existing circumstances on the home front?. Is there a sense of commonality between these ideals and the aspirations of the powers to be back home?

There absolutely has been no working during there stay in Au. And no breech of any laws. The problems that are being faced are unfair and the reasons behind them are assumptions. Mr. Daramys case has been closed with border controll but all other aspects to this situation are currently being worked out legally. No one is running a free vacation or looking for fame, just justice in this wrong doing for both parties involved. There was a misunderstanding on Dovys position with the current SL government that he cleared up but to start vicious rumors from a source that knows nothing about there current situation is wrong.

Again more vicious rumors coming from the community. So sad. Actually there are a few ways a visa can be revoked and legal issues are one which daramy has been cleared of. Others are to do not with illegal doings. Daramy giving a freestyle while on vacation because his fans demand it is hardly working. I know this couple closely and neither of them are working in AU. Thats a fact not a rumor. And has anyone looked at where the quotation marks are in this article? I see the quotes around the statement “I did not say that I was afraid to go back to Sierra Leone because of the current government. I have no direct problem with the government. What I did say was that I fear election season violence – as someone who is a public figure and has a great impact on the youth of the country, I am sometimes the target of political groups who wish to use me for their own ends.”
and the statement,“we support justice for our people, jobs for our people, clean water for our people, health for our people. We stand for the people of Sierra Leone. We give voice to their needs.”
Other than that the rest is the journalists interpretation!!!! She can put whatever spin on this article she wants, making him or his fiancee look bad. Daramy did not throw his fiancee under the bus so to speak but the JOURNALIST alludes that it was the fiancee who was trying to gain assistance. Assistance in finding the correct legal help! There is nothing wrong with that. This is why dealing with the media is always a tricky situation because they like to twist words and make the story as dramatic and scandal driven as possible IT’s THERE JOB!
Obviously many of you want to keep your fellow SL brother down by posting untrue rumors of working, cheating and backtracking. Non of which you can prove. To knock down someone you should uplift is sad but not shocking.
Rumors are nothing more than rumors!

I am a KDF Soldier, and am utterly shocked at the outright lies and dearth of facts in the ludicrous assertions contained in this article and attributed to PACM on the situation in Somalia and the Horn of Africa. Were the subject matter not of such critical importance to East Africa and the Horn of African Countries and peoples, I would not pay one bit of attention to this ludicrous article. A bit of research, a studious attention to the history and demographics of the entire Horn and East Africa would have served to educate both the authors of this article as well as the editors of this blog that carried it. And as is typical of such propaganda-value pieces, shallow facts is interwoven with fiction and outright lies. For the record, the Senegalese Soldiers are not deployed in Somalia to ”rescue the Ethiopians and Kenyans Forces” but simply because it gives this necessary intervention and African Face when forces beyond the borders of somalia are engaged – that is a central pillar of the AU Policy of Military Interventions. And while-as it is not improbable that the Americans are driven by their own interests in this matter, it would be entirely simplistic to expect them to rend Africa a hand in this African problem on altruism alone – we need to endeavor to ensure that our interests as Africans in this undertaking are not shunted aside. I wish to entreat that due diligence in discussion of this magnitude from all parties.

They are both on work visas now. They have been sponsored as of last week. Zager has many talents to pick from and multiple degrees so it was not really a problem to work out. They are both legal and are finding there way. Daramys visa was revoked and had nothing to do with not traveling with the band. He has made many trips without them. This situation is not a trap or a scam ……life takes turns sometimes, and these two will always not only survive but come out on top…..WATCH!!!!

Vicki please explain this to me i worked in Salone as an expatriate and was shocked that people actually considered double/triple dating by both sexes as normal what worried me is the impact this would have in combating HIV/Aids…has it always been like this?

    What a lie again !!
Their visas are not valid i can VOUCH and have PROFF of this, they are sponsored but it is not legit they do not work for these companies in which they claim. A FRIEND SET UP A SCAM ONE !!
Arianne Zager has many talents her best being a scammer and a compulsive lier , i also have much prof on this…
Come out on top now thats funny she is stuck in Australia with a husband that constantly cheats on her , even in AU , she even busted him !! but took him back cos lets face it who else would want her .
And well poor DOVY DOVY needs her if he ever has a chance on getting back into America . Lets face it he cant go back to SL .
Arianne ” your wrong ” you need to stop making out that you and your life is perfect , FAR FROM IT !!!

  517. your wrong!!!!! 14 May, 2012 at 16:35 Reply

No one said anything about a life being perfect! No one said anything about their relationship being perfect. But to be with someone for over 3 years is a LONG scam to get into a country INCASE something ever happens. You have no proof of anything and can’t even spell the word PROOF! There is no scam here and you have no idea of what you are speaking of. Please show us all this proof or PROFF you have. Make up more stories and let this become a focus for you…….. poor thing!

I don’t know, I have known Arianne since she was 4 years old and she has never ever been one to scam or be vicious. She has donated her time and money helping others including Sierra Leone. Is she a saint?? No. She is human just like every one of you but as far as her being a scam artist or evil you could not be more wrong. She keeps to herself and shows her art and music to the public. And other then that is fairly private and has been her entire life. Over the past few years I have gotten to know the relationship between Daramy and Zager and there has been bumps on the path just like any normal relationship but as far as him using her for proper papers…….if he cheats on her constantly why doesn’t he marry one of these girls that have citizenship in the US? Or marry his childs mother who has her citizenship? If there are so many women that hold his attention why not marry a girl in AU and just be done with it? He flew himself all the way to AU to prepose why do all that? Why take her to Africa and traditionally marry her in front of his mother and father? To scam for the future the no one had any idea would happen? Daramy had his visas set up on his own with his musical group and needed no ones help to stay legal. Let these two do what they want. If they are meant to be they will be. God will decide not blogg posters!

  526. Sao 4 June, 2012 at 15:50 Reply

personally I think a lot of people are all failing to look at the big picture. As a woman I would feel so violated if I had an individual peep in on me while having a shower, regardless of whether we are in a competition or a game. For Zainab to do what she did and insult DBK after he reprimanded her for her actions is just wrong. Imagine if the tables were turned and it was him spying on her in the shower, Africa would be in an uproar and we would be talking about sexual assault here. sometimes we need to watch what message our actions send out to the young people as using profanities on television and failing to apologize when confronted about our wrongs is just wrong. This has nothing to do with being Sierra Leonean, it about being a decent individual and violence, cursing or using words like N***** and B*** is no way for ANYONE to act. I’m not condoning DBK’s actions but gosh I feel embarrassed whenever I hear young promising individuals acting like they have no self respect

    • Terri 5 June, 2012 at 03:17 Reply

Exactly, we can’t have double standards. What applies to women should also apply to men. Just because she is a woman, does not mean it is alright for her to do what she did. He had every right to confront her and to react when provoked. It is just unfortunate that it resulted in this violence. I don’t condone violence but we cannot treat men and women differently. She was not right and everyone should stop makng her out to be the victim. She was the instigator and they are both victims. She knew exactly what she was aiming to do when she started this whole nonsense.

  527. Ella 4 June, 2012 at 19:05 Reply

She is gorgeous! This is the first time I have seen or heard of her as I am not Sierra Leonean, but her language/attitude is definitely a turn off. Perhaps some identity issues need to be addressed? Both her language and accent are uncharacteristic of an African woman. One minute she sounds Sierra Leonean and the next she is hood. That lack of consistency is simply put, “shady”. That said, while she might have provoked that HOT slap, he should have been disqualified as well. Allowing him to stay on the show, sends the message that he did nothing wrong and slapping her was wrong. Simply for the fact that violence should not be tolerated, unless maybe it is self defense. How is it that she is disqualified for provoking him and he is not disqualified for being violent? Even this title alone led me to believe she actually started the fight by being physically violent. The fact that she was disqualified and he was not is definitely a problem, and it reflects that general attitude most Africans (especially men) have towards violence against women. If you can “justify” it, then we can all move along like it is okay and it is NOT okay.

I would like to congratulate Isha. Its incredible that she used her personal resources to MAKE this happen. I totally get where she is coming from. Football is an international language, sport in general promotes so much positiveness.
I worked in Salone on and off for two years at the end of the war, when i returned home to my Native Scotland all people wanted to talk about was diamonds and the associated horrors. Yet all i could speak of was a vibrancy i had never before witnessed in what was a brutalized nation. The talent is there, the desire is there, it’s time to move on. This is inspiring, i wonder just how much of the lack of corporate support was down to Isha being female, academic, well bred and rich. Im guessing too many noses are out of joint.

The terrain in Koinadougou district is brutal. Why not bring one person from each each village to Kabala Govt Hospital, and train them in basic midwifery (presumably enough to save most lives), and then send them back to their villages. Seems like the only way really to address the issue.

Who cares for the singer, only the vibes that matters as the real true Salone today? The REDEEMER turned (THE DECEIVER) of the people who entrusted in him as their leader when he took over Ahmed Kabbah. Let’s vote for a new direction” that will help us build ‘ a better Sierra Leone’ for our people who are today suffering under a Government bereft of ideas, trapped in corruption, nepotism, regionalism, incompetence, mendacity, and selfish power hungry leadership. Not who you want to be President but who in the list would most change the direction of Mama Salone today, keeps no sacred cows in their back yards. A zero tolerance of State criminals. Maintain full law and order of our beloved country and treat everyone the same. No division between the North and South or East and West(1 country,1 people)

The slapping is not justifiable, because she is a woman. He should have exercised patient to report her to Big Brother, he is older and even stronger than her, women are vulnerable and we do not support violent against women. is this guy crazy, if it was my sister i will retaliate. This is what we usually say in krio(natin pass advantage)

    • Sao 10 June, 2012 at 09:31 Reply

i don’t know what world you live in dear but in this world where people like Zainanb behave the way the do, everyone has limits. for someone who goes about screaming her head off and insulting people at every given opportunity she really does know how to play a good victim.
as someone who follows the show, I remember Zainab having an argument with another housemate in Downville. The minute they started arguing she started insulting the man’s mother and family. Faced with another argument in Upville and having DKB insult her father, she takes such serious offence and wants to start a fight. now if that isn’t someone taking advantage of the fact that she is female i dint know what is. while i do not condone violence against women I did know from the start that Zainab had a slap like that coming and even if not on the show or from a man, it was coming. You cant go about provoking people and not expect a reaction, some people have short tempers and would not be able to handle what the average person does.
she really needs to change her attitude because it screams the word uncivilized and trust me no amount of money, fame or success can change that.

  537. Christian Sharkah 7 June, 2012 at 13:20 Reply

If it was in America or Europe, DKB would have been disqualified because they recognized, respect and protect the right of a woman.Africans why are we behaving to each other like that, because they have seen the high potential in Zainab that is why they decided to set her up.My sister keep the faith God have a plan for you.So so bad heart Africa make ah tire.No matter what Sierra Leone will one day win this show.
