Popular Afrobeats artist, Davido has announced on X that his contributions to charitable organizations will occur this year again, coinciding with his birthday on November 21st, 2024.

The global icon announced that the donation would focus on addressing drug abuse and addiction among Nigerian youth.

His announcement on X (formerly Twitter) wrote, “This year, in celebration of my birthday, we will be donating to orphanages and a charity focused on helping young individuals avoid drug abuse and addiction.”

“My foundation and I are committing 300 million Naira to orphanages across Nigeria as part of my annual contribution to the nation. Further details on the distribution will be provided tomorrow.”

His announcement has sparked a lot of reactions from people, especially Nigerians.

Some individuals have reacted to Davido’s announcement on social media. The critics have questioned why he has decided to announce his decision publicly.

Daniel Regha stated on X, “Davido just a reminder that this pledge hasn’t been fulfilled for years now; And so u know, a lot of people dropped their business ideas hoping to get financial support (from u). Before u talk about donating N300m, disburse the N19-20m u owe the public. New donations doesn’t cancel old debts.”

Another user, Woods said, “So why are you announcing it, you have a lot to learn from Wizkid who helps people without letting the whole world know about it, don’t forget to leave your camera at home when helping the needy. Just saying.”

Others have showered the artist with praise.

X user E-Maney wrote, “We Rise by lifting others.. That’s the way to go!’

This marks the first occasion where Davido will publicly address the issue of drug abuse.

The Grammy-nominated artist previously encountered issues with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in 2015 due to the depiction of hard drugs in the music video for his track ‘Fans Mi,’ which features Meek Mill.

Through this initiative, Davido hopes to shed light on the issue of drug abuse among Nigerian youth and contribute to finding lasting solutions to the problem.

The Inspiration Behind Davido’s Donations

The main reason behind Davido’s donations is to support orphans across Nigeria and provide relief during the country’s ongoing economic challenges.The artist, recognising the need to assist orphans, established the Davido Adeleke Foundation(DAF) in 2022 with a mission to make annual contributions to orphanages nationwide.

His philanthropic gesture not only aims to provide immediate support but also seeks to inspire his fans to contribute to charitable causes. Thus, raising awareness about pressing issues in society.

This marks the second consecutive year Davido has used his birthday to give back to the community. In November 2021, he donated N250 million to 292 orphanages. This set the precedent for his impactful generosity.

In July 2023, the ‘Awuke’ artist also made another significant donation of ₦237 million to more than 400 orphanages across Nigeria.
