Sierra Leoneans in the DC metro area gathered at Bus Boys and Poets on K and 5th Street in the nation’s capital to celebrate the connections between African American ‘black loyalist’s and modern day creoles.

The event was organized by Dr Fuambai Sia Ahmadu, founder of the Miss Sierra Leone USA pageant and medical anthropologist.

Former peace corps volunteer and author Kevin Lowther, George Washington University  Professor of History Nemata Blyden, song writer Freddy Cole Shabaka, and poets Natasha Beckley (Miss Sierra Leone 2011), and Akindele Decker were also in attendance.

Excellent exposure of a society that has tremendous historical clout, but also one that has been gutted by political tsunamis, whose epicentre emanates from a constant collision of tribal plates that are forever shifting against the interest of a paradise that for the moment is completely lost. How does one synthesize these positive efforts with the reality of existing circumstances on the home front?. Is there a sense of commonality between these ideals and the aspirations of the powers to be back home?
