REGISTER TO VOTE IN SIERRA LEONE

The National Electoral Commision of Sierra Leone headed by Christiana Thorpe (www.necsl.org) will open voter registration from February 26-March 18th 2007. Those who do not register to vote will not be able to participate in the July 28th parliamentary and presidential elections. Though I personally think the window of time to register is too short and too close to the actual election this is what it is for now and we can only hope to change this in the future. Every Sierra Leonean above the age of 18 living at home and abroad is encouraged to register and vote. For those of us not living at home it will be almost impossible to make two trips to Sierra Leone to register and then another trip in July to vote. I doubt many people will be going home just to register and vote. But this is what we have for now and we have to make do. By next elections we should make sure that the roughly 500,000 of us currently living outside of Sierra Leone will be able to vote via the embassies or some other mechanism.
