Organisations in Sierra Leone join the world to commemorate Menstrual Hygiene Day

Various institutions in Sierra Leone has joined the world to Commemorate Menstrual Hygiene Day 2019.

Institutions like Marie Stopes International Sierra Leone, Girlz Empowered Sierra Leone, Sierra Leone Commercial Bank African Health Initiative and Girl Up Vine Club Sierra Leone to name a few.

Menstrual Hygiene Day is an annual awareness day on May 28 to highlight the importance of good menstrual hygiene management. It was initiated by the German-based NGO WASH United in 2014 and aims to benefit women and girls worldwide.

Here are some highlights on their activities on the day:

Girl Up Vine Club Sierra Leone hosted a Menstrual Hygiene Day workshop inviting 5 schools to learn about menstruation & Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM).

The students they invited were divided into groups to discuss & give a presentation on different Menstrual Hygiene practices.

Girlz Empowered Sierra Leone also commemorated the with school going pupils at Sensi Tech Hub, Freetown.

They were given a rundown flow on -Menstruation hygiene management-And were also trained on how to prepare locally reusable menstrual pad.

The menstrual pad was distributed to the pupils at the end of the event.

African Health Initiative went to the female correctional center and did a donation of toiletries and sanitary equipment to commemorate the day.

Sierra Commercial Bank also did a donation at the Female Correctional Center and various speakers spoke to the inmates on the importance of the day.

Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) is defined as ‘Women and adolescent girls using a clean menstrual management material to absorb or collect blood that can be changed in privacy as often as necessary for the duration of the menstruation period, using soap and water for washing the body as required and having access.
