Sierra Leone Fashion: Sai Sankoh’s ‘Lusting Havana’ is out now

Sai Sankoh, the luxury women’s wear brand, just launched its resort collection, ‘Lusting Havana’.

The collection is a very colourful one and Sankoh says she was inspired by all the magical destinations she’s visited and also gave credit to her hometown Sierra Leone naming the lush green rainforest, colourful architecture with picturesque and inviting landscape as part of her inspirators.

 

“I drew inspiration from hot African summer days where you have a lot of birds chirping, butterflies, all surrounded by a bright and colourful marketplace.”

“I am very anal and hands on. So, for instance, I was not too keen on one print, so I took it to the next flight out to physically work on it myself. I think I have to relax a little bit and have a lot more trust with my team instead of trying to do it all.”

Sai Sankoh as a brand is looking to bridge the gap between loungewear and resort wear and ultimately bring new excitement to leisurewear through the new collection. Apart from their exquisite kaftans, Sai Sankoh offers a wide range of additional items such as tops, jumpsuits, skirt sets and pant sets.

 

“My line is resort wear so I think of colours, vibrancy, and volume. I chose a lot of green this collection is to pay homage to my country, Sierra Leone. It’s so incredibly beautiful and a lot of my inspiration stemmed from that”

The range features hues such as snakeskin green, lemon with splashes of neon, red and hot pink. Africa’s diverse fauna and flora-inspired the motifs used in the collection. To tie it all together, the collection was shot in Havana, Cuba, where the melting pot of Cuban and African culture provided the most perfect backdrop.

 

“Havana was chosen because it also had a lot of African heritage, the city has so much character and history, it’s easy to fall in love with it.”
