Sierra Leone Fashion: Introducing Thamaniafrique

Thamaniafrique is a Sierra Leonean brand based in Canada created by mother of one, Rita Jalloh. She makes bold and beautiful accessories, home decors, outfits and custom designed shoes using African prints.
Designing. HOW DID YOU GET INTO DESIGNING &CREATING?
Designing has always been a passion and It’s a God given talent.I’ve been designing since I was a kid and remember my mother giving me my first little sewing machine when I was just in class 3 because she saw how much I love to create/design.
The Brand. WHAT DOES THAMAIAFRIQUE REPRESENT?
Since Africa has many different cultures and languages. Thamani is a swahili word for (quality, positive) and I’m a huge believer in those and Afrique is french for Africa. So it translates into quality positive Africa.
WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOUR CREATIONS?
Culture and lifestyle definitely plays a role, I grew up seeing my people (Fulanis) making their own garments and accessories. It’s the beauty of fashion especially African fashion that inspires me. I love the Ghanian Kente because of the African history it comes with. The beautiful vibrant colours remind me of how Africa is blessed with natural resources e.g. yellow (gold) green (rain forest) and etc. I make clothes that I can see myself wearing, combining history with a modern twist that attracts the young and now generation.
WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR THAMANIAFRIQUE?
I like to take africa with me wherever I go. I am an African and I can’t run away from that. Thamaniafrique is a growing brand and it is expected to grow with location, not only in the diaspora but also in Africa.
