President John Mahama re-elected as President of Ghana

In his first statement just hours after being declared winner of Ghana’s national elections, President John Dramani Mahama thanked the people for their confidence in him.

“Ghana is the winner,” he says. The president wore a pink polo shirt in a brief interview with journalists at his home.

Earlier, Ghana’s Electoral Commission announced that Mr. Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had been re-elected for a second term in office. It was just 3 days ago on friday December 7th that  Ghanaians went to the polls in a heavily contested race between the president and New Patriotic Party (NPP) front man Nana Akufo-Addo.

Mahama wins with 5,574,761 or 50.70 percent of the total votes. Akufo-Addo received 5,248,898 votes polled representing  47.74 percent.

EC commissioner Dr Kwadwo Afari-Gyan says that voter turn out was 79.4 percent of the registered 14.1 million voters.

A small contingent of African Union observers led by former Nigerian President Obasanjo gave the elections a clean bill earlier today amidst claims from the opposition NPP that the elections had been flawed.

Mr Mahama became president of Ghana back in July when the sitting President John Atta Mills passed away suddenly.

Ghana holds elections every 4 years.
